How Can Politicians Connect with Their Base?
What makes a candidate popular? Here is an interesting point of view. In a recent interview with David Remnick, published by The New Yorker, Ezra Klein argues, “one of my most strongly held views about politics is that the most important question for voters is not whether they like the politician but whether the politician likes them.” Klein believes that the worst part of Hillary Clinton’s infamous “deplorables” speech, from 2016, was her use of the word “irredeemable” to describe Trump voters. “When you begin to talk like that, it’s a severing of political community,” Klein said. Instead, he believes that Barack Obama modelled the ideal type of politics, by offering a “very open-palmed approach.”

Our plans for an upbeat lead were blown away by the terrible shooting in
Minneapolis. One more example of the awful effects of having 400 million+
guns in the US, and no political will to put basic common sense limits on
them. Our hearts go out to those killed and injured, and their families and
communities. We all do better when kids and politicians alike do not have to
fear for their lives. We all must do better. Thoughts and prayers are
important, but not anywhere nearly enough.
But there was some exciting news this week, and it is related: A state
senate seat in Iowa was flipped by Democrat Catelin Drey, who campaigned
against gun violence and for reproductive rights. She won in a district that
voted for Trump by double digits— and this broke the GOP supermajority in
the Iowa State Senate! …

District 4 School Board Candidate Abbey Payeur spoke to the Anoka-Hennepin School Board during a recent meeting. Abbey, who is a recognized expert in literacy instruction, specializes in evidence-based reading instruction and structured literacy. As Vice-Chair of The Reading League Minnesota and frequent presenter to teachers, principals, school administrators, and teacher-trainers, Abbey provides high-quality professional development to teachers ensuring that they have the tools to support all learners. As a member of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), she helps families advocate for the needs of their children with dyslexia. Her research at the University of Minnesota focused on neurological differences and neuroplasticity found in students with dyslexia. With experience as both a classroom educator and university professor, Abbey is committed to bridging the gap between research and practice to improve literacy and learning outcomes for all students.
Get to Know Dr. Abbey
Abbey Payeur, Mom of three, brings experience and expertise to the role of school board member. Running in District 4 of Anoka-Hennepin, Abbey is in it to win. She is busy meeting community members and speaking about the importance of making school boards use evidence-based decision-making. Board members must use their positions to make good decisions for the wellbeing of the kids and to strengthen our community. Abbey had a booth at the Ham Lake Freedom Festival on Saturday, June 28th and also attended the Andover Family Fun Fest on July 11th and 12th. A Town Hall (TBA) is coming soon.
